  • End of an era?

    End of an era?

Looks like Sony is ending the sale of physical media and also closing the Playstation store on the PS3 and Vita. Below are the statements on both of these updates.

    Physical Disc Production ending

In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.  Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.

We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.

Playstation 3 and Vita Store closing

Changes start this year in select markets, followed by global changes in 2027.

After nearly two decades of supporting the PS3 console generation, we wanted to let you know we will be closing the PlayStation Store on PS3, as well as on PS Vita. PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in select markets starting this year, followed by global closures for PS3 and PS Vita next year. That means new content purchases will no longer be possible once the PlayStation Store closes on these devices. To ease the transition, players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future.

As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required. As a result, we will need to close PlayStation Store on these devices in the timeframes as follows:

    • Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026.
    • Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026.
    • In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.

We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming. PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make.

As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.

To our amazing players, we want to give our heartfelt thanks for your ongoing passion and support, which has helped inspire us to shape PlayStation into what it is today. We are excited for the future ahead as we continue to push the boundaries of play. We look forward to having you on this journey with us as we explore new game worlds and new adventures that have yet to come.

What are you all’s thoughts on these updates? What does this mean for ownership of the games we purchase?

The 40th Anniversary Special Video (feat. Hans Zimmer)

In one of the most unexpected crossovers in franchise history, a global special video was released today.

“It was truly a joy to be part of this special anniversary project… Drawing inspiration from Akira Toriyama’s incredible illustrations… making it an exciting and unforgettable experience.” — Hans Zimmer

The video, titled “Infinite Future,” features dynamic animation of Toriyama’s original manga covers and illustrations, all set to a sweeping orchestral score by the legendary Hans Zimmer. It’s a literal love letter to 40 years of Goku’s journey.

Here is the breakdown of the major anime projects and gaming news announced at the event

Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol (Moro Arc)

The moment fans have been waiting for since 2018 is finally here. Toei Animation officially confirmed that the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc” is in production.

    • The Scoop: This is the direct sequel to the Dragon Ball Super anime, adapting the high-stakes battle against the planet-eater, Moro.
    • The Teaser: A key visual was revealed showing Goku and Vegeta in their sleek Galactic Patrol uniforms. While a release date wasn’t set, the “Set for Production” status means the wait for the Moro arc is almost over.

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus (Enhanced Edition)

Coming Fall 2026, this isn’t just a rerun. This is a “reconstructed” TV anime project focusing on the Battle of Gods saga.

    • What’s New: It features improved animation, new cuts, and reshot scenes to align the power scaling more closely with modern lore.
    • The Beerus Factor: During the stage event, Beerus’s voice actor teased that this version emphasizes that Beerus is still a massive “moving goalpost” in power, capable of defeating Goku in a blink. It will also incorporate light manga elements and new notes left by Akira Toriyama.

The Genkidamatsuri wasn’t just a celebration of the past; it was a clear signal that the future of Dragon Ball is as bright! Between the mysterious AGE 1000 project and the continued support for Sparking! ZERO, we’re going to be busy for a long time.

  • My Stand Out Game Awards Trailers

My Stand Out Game Awards Trailers

The Game Awards 2025 delivered its usual barrage of world premieres, but for me, a handful of trailers rose above the rest. From unexpected sequels to long-awaited reveals, these were the games that stole the show and have me eagerly anticipating 2026 and beyond.

Here are my standout trailers from the night:

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic While details are scarce, the simple teaser for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was enough to send chills down my spine. The promise of a new, completely new Star Wars game was rumored prior to the event, and this reveal is a welcome surprise for fans of the wider Star Wars universe.

Screamer – Story Trailer This trailer caught my attention for its vibrant visuals and fast-paced, anime-inspired action. The story trailer for Screamer kept its slick presentation and promise of an exciting PS5 game.

CONTROL Resonant Remedy Entertainment’s official reveal of the Control sequel, CONTROL Resonant, was a masterful display of the franchise’s signature reality-bending aesthetic. The search results suggest a big departure, with a rumor it will be a melee-focused action RPG starring Jesse Faden’s brother, Dylan [2.1, 2.2]. The trailer’s trippy visuals and shift in combat focus have set the stage for an intriguing new entry in the Oldest House.

Invincible VS – Official Release Date Trailer The 3v3 tag fighting game based on the popular series got its official release date. The trailer confirmed that Invincible VS is launching on April 30, 2026, and also featured the reveal of a new character, Ella Mental.

NO LAW – The Official Reveal Trailer From Neon Giant, the developers of The Ascent, came the reveal of their new title, NO LAW. This first-person-shooter is set in the richly detailed, chaotic cityscape of Port Desire, focusing on a quest for vengeance with intense, brutal FPS action.

PRAGMATA – Pre-Order Trailer We finally got a new look and a potential release date hint for Capcom’s mysterious title, PRAGMATA. The pre-order trailer suggests we’re getting closer to experiencing this enigmatic sci-fi adventure.

ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE Announcement Trailer For fans of aerial combat, the announcement of ACE COMBAT 8 was a major moment. The brief trailer promised the intense dogfights and cinematic visuals that define the series, with a projected 2026 launch.

Mega Man: Dual Override The Blue Bomber is back! Capcom officially revealed Mega Man: Dual Override, bringing the series back to its 2D platforming roots. The trailer confirmed a 2027 launch and showcased the classic, challenging gameplay the franchise is known for, sparking excitement for the next chapter in the Mega Man saga.

These trailers were my favorite highlights, creating an unmissable evening of gaming announcements. The future of gaming looks wild, weird, and incredibly exciting!

The emergence of new titles, significant updates to existing ones, and the continued recognition of community pioneers signal a healthy and evolving landscape for fighting games.

  • The Fading Stars: My Take on PlayStation Stars Winding Down

The Fading Stars: My Take on PlayStation Stars Winding Down

Well, folks, it’s a bittersweet day for many of us in the PlayStation community, especially for those of us who’ve been actively engaged with PlayStation Stars. Sony Interactive has announced that they’re winding down the current iteration of the loyalty program, and honestly, as someone who’s poured a good chunk of gaming time into it, it’s a bit of a gut punch.

For those of us who live and breathe PlayStation, Stars wasn’t just a gimmick. It was a tangible way to get a little something back for our dedication. From racking up points by simply playing games to snagging those unique Digital Collectibles that celebrated PlayStation’s rich history, it felt like a genuine nod to the hardcore fans. I’m not going to lie, those points, redeemed for wallet funds, really added up over time and genuinely saved me money on new releases. As a power user, I was consistently engaging with campaigns, hitting those milestones, and frankly, I was seeing the benefits.

Grace Chen, VP of Network Advertising, Loyalty & Licensed Merchandise, mentioned that Sony is always “experimenting with new and exciting ways to bring our community of players together.” And look, I get it. Companies evolve, programs shift, and they’re always looking at “player and industry trends.” But from my perspective on the ground, PlayStation Stars felt like it was hitting the mark for a significant portion of their most dedicated players. It fostered a deeper connection, as she put it, by actually rewarding that connection.

So, what are the key takeaways from this announcement?

    • New Members Shut Off: As of today, new sign-ups for this version of PlayStation Stars are closed. If you’re not in, you’re out.
    • No Rejoining: If you’re a current member and you decide to cancel, you can’t rejoin this program, and all your hard-earned points vanish. So, think carefully before hitting that button!
    • Earning Deadline: You can still earn Digital Collectibles, Points, and level up your status until July 23, 2025, at 7:59 AM PDT. After that, no new campaigns, rewards, or status benefits. That’s a little over a year to squeeze out those last rewards.
    • Program End Date: The current program officially ceases on November 2, 2026.
    • Point Redemption Window: You’ve got until that November 2026 date to redeem any existing points, assuming they don’t expire before then.
    • Digital Collectibles Remain: Good news for the collectors – your existing Digital Collectibles will still be accessible, which is a small comfort.

While I understand that “evolution” is part of the game, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss for a program that genuinely provided value and recognized the effort of loyal players like myself. The idea that they’re “exploring new ways to evolve our loyalty program efforts for the future” gives a glimmer of hope. I sincerely hope that whatever comes next truly builds upon the best aspects of Stars – the direct rewards, the recognition of active play, and the sense of being part of something bigger than just a transaction.

We’ve supported PlayStation Stars since its 2022 launch, and I’m sure many of us, like me, will be keenly watching to see what the future holds for PlayStation’s loyalty initiatives. Here’s hoping the next iteration celebrates us, the players, just as effectively, if not more so, than Stars did. Until then, I’ll be burning through my remaining points and enjoying those last few campaigns. It’s been a good run, PlayStation Stars.

Unleash Your Creativity: The New GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs Are Here

Unveiled today at the CES trade show, the GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs are poised to revolutionize the world of generative and agentic AI content creation, offering a plethora of new tools and functionalities for video editing, livestreaming, 3D rendering, and more.

Leveraging the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture, the GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs can accelerate generative AI models by up to 2x while requiring a smaller memory footprint compared to their predecessors. They boast ninth-generation NVIDIA encoders for advanced video editing and livestreaming, and are equipped with NVIDIA DLSS 4 and a whopping 32GB of VRAM to tackle even the most demanding 3D projects.

Here’s a glimpse into what the GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs have in store for creators:

Built for the Generative AI Era

Generative AI has the potential to produce incredible results for creators, but with models becoming increasingly complex and resource-intensive, running them smoothly can be a challenge even on cutting-edge hardware.

The GeForce RTX 50 Series tackles this hurdle by introducing FP4 support. FP4 is a reduced-precision method, akin to file compression, that minimizes model sizes. Compared to FP16, the standard method used by most models, FP4 consumes less than half the memory, and the 50 Series GPUs deliver over 2x faster performance than their predecessors. Remarkably, this is achieved with virtually no loss in quality owing to advanced quantization techniques offered by NVIDIA TensorRT Model Optimizer.

For instance, Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 [dev] model in FP16 necessitates over 23GB of VRAM, restricting its compatibility to the GeForce RTX 4090 and professional GPUs. With FP4, however, FLUX.1 [dev] requires less than 10GB, making it compatible with a wider range of GeForce RTX GPUs. Consequently, with a GeForce RTX 4090 with FP16, the FLUX.1 [dev] model generates images in 15 seconds with 30 steps. On the other hand, a GeForce RTX 5090 with FP4 accomplishes this feat in just over five seconds.

An innovative NVIDIA AI Blueprint for 3D-guided generative AI based on FLUX.1 [dev] will be offered as an NVIDIA NIM microservice, empowering artists with more control over text-based image generation. This blueprint allows creators to leverage simple 3D objects, either created manually or generated with AI, and position them within a 3D renderer like Blender to steer AI image generation.

A streamlined workflow powered by the FLUX NIM microservice and ComfyUI can then generate high-quality images that align perfectly with the 3D scene’s composition. The NVIDIA Blueprint for 3D-guided generative AI is expected to be available through GitHub using a one-click installer in February.

Furthermore, Stability AI announced the imminent release (this month) of its Stable Point Aware 3D (SPAR3D) model on RTX AI PCs. Thanks to RTX acceleration, this novel model from Stability AI is poised to transform 3D design, providing exceptional control over 3D content creation by facilitating real-time editing and the ability to generate an object in less than a second from a single image.

    Professional-Grade Video for All

The GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs deliver a generational leap in terms of NVIDIA encoders and decoders with support for the 4:2:2 pro-grade color format, multiview-HEVC (MV-HEVC) for 3D and virtual reality (VR) video, and the innovative AV1 Ultra High Quality mode.

Most consumer cameras are restricted to 4:2:0 color compression, which reduces the amount of color information. While 4:2:0 is generally sufficient for video playback on web browsers, it cannot provide the color depth that professional video editors require for color grading videos. The 4:2:2 format offers double the color data with just a 1.3x increase in RAW file size, making it the ideal choice for video editing workflows.

Decoding 4:2:2 video can be challenging due to the larger file sizes. The GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs feature built-in 4:2:2 hardware support that can decode up to eight times the 4K 6

    Livestreaming Gets Smarter

Livestreamers, rejoice! The RTX 50 Series, in collaboration with Streamlabs and Inworld AI, introduces the Streamlabs Intelligent Streaming Assistant. This AI-powered sidekick acts as your on-stream partner, managing tasks, interacting with your audience, and even providing technical support.

Now you can focus on delivering top-notch content while the Streamlabs Intelligent Streaming Assistant handles the behind-the-scenes work.

    Unprecedented 3D Performance

The RTX 50 Series caters to 3D artists with the largest ever GeForce RTX GPU memory – a whopping 32GB on the RTX 5090. This allows you to build intricate 3D worlds and work with multiple applications simultaneously without a hitch. Additionally, the fourth-generation RT Cores accelerate 3D rendering by a staggering 40%, giving you the power to bring your creative visions to life with unparalleled speed and detail.
