    End of an era?

    Looks like Sony is ending the sale of physical media and also closing the Playstation store on the PS3 and Vita. Below are the statements on both of these updates.

    Physical Disc Production ending

    In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

    As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.  Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.  

    This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.  

    We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support. 

    Playstation 3 and Vita Store closing

    Changes start this year in select markets, followed by global changes in 2027.

    After nearly two decades of supporting the PS3 console generation, we wanted to let you know we will be closing the PlayStation Store on PS3, as well as on PS Vita. PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in select markets starting this year, followed by global closures for PS3 and PS Vita next year. That means new content purchases will no longer be possible once the PlayStation Store closes on these devices. To ease the transition, players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future. 

    As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required. As a result, we will need to close PlayStation Store on these devices in the timeframes as follows:

    • Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026.
    • Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026.
    • In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.

    We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming. PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make. 

    As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future. 

    To our amazing players, we want to give our heartfelt thanks for your ongoing passion and support, which has helped inspire us to shape PlayStation into what it is today. We are excited for the future ahead as we continue to push the boundaries of play. We look forward to having you on this journey with us as we explore new game worlds and new adventures that have yet to come.

    If you thought February was going to be a quiet month for gaming, Sony just decided to change the narrative. In a surprising move, PlayStation Plus is offering a “bumper” lineup for February, dropping four titles instead of the usual three.

    From the squared circle to the deep freeze of an alien ocean, this month’s selection covers just about every genre imaginable. All four titles will be available to claim starting Tuesday, February 3.

    Here is the breakdown of what is hitting your library next month.

    1. Undisputed (PS5)

    For sports fans tired of the arcade style, Undisputed is the answer. This is a serious simulation that aims to recapture the technical depth of boxing. It boasts a roster of over 70 licensed fighters—from current heavyweights to legends of the past.

    The game features over 60 individual punches and a revolutionary footwork system that lets you control the ring. If you’ve been waiting for a spiritual successor to the Fight Night days, this is the one to download first.

    2. Subnautica: Below Zero (PS5, PS4)

    The original Subnautica is widely considered one of the best survival games ever made, and Below Zero turns the temperature down—way down. Set on the arctic region of Planet 4546B, you are investigating the disappearance of your sister while trying not to freeze (or get eaten).

    This isn’t just about managing hunger and thirst; it’s about crafting habitats, piloting vehicles, and exploring a world that is as beautiful as it is terrifying.

    3. Ultros (PS5, PS4)

    If the art style looks familiar, that’s because the visionary behind Hotline Miami, El Huervo, is involved. Ultros is a trippy, sci-fi adventure set in a cosmic sarcophagus.

    The gameplay loop is unique: you engage in brutal, close-quarter combat with cosmic horrors, but you also have to… garden? Tending to plant life opens new paths and offers moments of peace amidst the chaos. It utilizes a time-loop mechanic, allowing you to restart key moments to unlock different areas of the map.

    4. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (PS4)

    Sometimes you just want to go fast and blow things up. Ace Combat 7 puts you in the cockpit of modern and futuristic fighter jets for intense dogfights. The visuals are photorealistic, and the tactical gameplay requires you to actually think like a pilot rather than just holding down the trigger. It’s the perfect game to test your reflexes (and your stomach for barrel rolls).

    This October, PlayStation Plus is treating subscribers to a lineup perfect for the spooky season. Leading the charge for the Essential tier are three titles that cover a wide range of genres, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy as the nights get longer.

    Headlining the month is the critically acclaimed survival horror game, Alan Wake 2 (PS5). From the masterminds at Remedy Entertainment, this game received widespread praise for its psychological storytelling and innovative gameplay. It’s the perfect addition for those looking to get into the Halloween spirit.

    Joining the horror-filled fun are two other standout titles:

    • Goat Simulator 3 (PS4, PS5): This chaotic and hilarious sandbox game is the antidote to any spooky-season scares. Wreak havoc as a goat and explore a world full of ridiculous physics and over-the-top missions.
    • Cocoon (PS4, PS5): From one of the creators of Limbo and Inside, this mind-bending puzzle adventure game has you jumping between worlds nested inside glowing orbs. It’s a visually stunning and unique experience that’s sure to captivate.

    These three games will be available to all PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium subscribers starting on October 7.

    PlayStation Plus September 2025 Games Revealed: Psychonauts 2, Stardew Valley, Viewfinder

    Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation Plus Monthly Games lineup for September 2025, offering subscribers three distinct and highly-regarded titles: Psychonauts 2, Stardew Valley, and Viewfinder.

    In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, Adam Michel, director of game services content at Sony Interactive Entertainment, confirmed that all three games will be available for PlayStation Plus members to claim starting Tuesday, Sept. 2.

    Here’s a closer look at what subscribers can expect next month.

    Psychonauts 2 | PS4

    Players will step into the mind-bending world of Psychonauts 2, a cinematic platform-adventure game packed with quirky missions and mysterious conspiracies. The story follows Razputin “Raz” Aquato, a trained acrobat and powerful young psychic who has fulfilled his dream of joining the Psychonauts, an international psychic espionage organization.

    However, the agency is in turmoil. Its leader has been unstable since a rescue mission, and a mole is hiding within their headquarters. Players will guide Raz through the minds of friends and foes, using an arsenal of customizable psychic powers to defeat a murderous villain in an adventure filled with danger, excitement, and humor.

    Stardew Valley | PS4

    Get ready to trade city life for a charming, pixelated countryside in the beloved farming simulation RPG, Stardew Valley. After inheriting your grandfather’s old, overgrown farm plot, you are armed with only hand-me-down tools and a few coins to start a new life.

    Players are challenged to live off the land and transform the unruly fields into a thriving home. The task is complicated by the influence of the Joja Corporation, which has caused the town’s old ways of life to vanish. With a little dedication, you might be the one to restore Stardew Valley to its former greatness.

    Viewfinder | PS4, PS5

    Rounding out the month is the mind-bending first-person puzzle adventure, Viewfinder. This innovative title challenges perception and reality by allowing players to reshape the world with an instant camera.

    In Viewfinder, you can bring photos, paintings, sketches, and postcards to life by placing them into the environment. This unique mechanic is used to solve a variety of challenging puzzles across stunning landscapes as you uncover the mysteries of this colorful world.

    Last Chance for August 2025 Games

    As the new games arrive, the current lineup departs. PlayStation Plus members have until Monday, Sept. 1, to add August’s titles — Lies of P, DayZ, and My Hero One’s Justice 2 — to their game library before they are gone.

    PlayStation Plus Reveals August 2025 Games: ‘Lies of P,’ ‘DayZ’ and More

    Sony has officially announced the lineup of PlayStation Plus monthly games for August, offering a grim soulslike, a hardcore survival simulation and a vibrant anime fighter.

    Starting Aug. 5, all PlayStation Plus members can add “Lies of P,” “DayZ,” and “My Hero One’s Justice 2” to their game library at no extra cost.

    Here is a closer look at the titles coming to the service.

    ‘Lies of P’ (PS5, PS4)

    Inspired by the classic tale of Pinocchio, “Lies of P” is a dark soulslike set in the Belle Époque-inspired city of Krat. Players control the puppet Pinocchio on a quest to find his creator, Mr. Geppetto, while battling monstrous puppets and navigating a city lost to madness. The game features a deep combat system with a variety of weapons and swappable “Legion Arms” that grant special abilities. To achieve the goal of becoming human, players will face choices that require them to lie.

      ‘DayZ’ (PS4)

      In the post-apocalyptic world of “DayZ,” the only goal is to survive. This hardcore online survival game drops up to 60 players onto sprawling maps—including the original Chernarus and the 163-square-kilometer Livonia—where they must contend with zombie-like infected and other, often more dangerous, players. With no checkpoints or saves, death is permanent. When your character dies, you lose all your progress and must start over from scratch.

        ‘My Hero One’s Justice 2’ (PS4)

        The fight for justice continues in “My Hero One’s Justice 2.” Based on the hit anime series, this 3D arena fighter allows players to form teams of heroes and villains and clash in epic battles across large, destructible environments. Players can make full use of each character’s unique “Quirk” in this over-the-top sequel to “My Hero One’s Justice.”

        Free PlayStation 15th Anniversary Avatars

        The celebration for the 15th anniversary of PlayStation Plus continues in August. Starting Aug. 5, all members can claim a special set of free avatars. These feature art from popular titles including “Cyberpunk 2077,” “Hogwarts Legacy,” “Diablo IV,” “God of War Ragnarök” and “Twisted Metal.”

        PlayStation Plus is marking its 15th anniversary this month, celebrating a journey that began on June 29, 2010. Sony Interactive Entertainment is extending a “huge thank you” to its fans for their support over the years.

        To commemorate this milestone, PlayStation Plus has a series of celebratory activities planned for the summer, kicking off with the July Monthly Games, available to members from July 1 to Aug. 4.

        July’s Monthly Games Lineup

        • Diablo IV (PS5, PS4): Dive into the latest installment of the action RPG series, offering endless demon-slaying, customizable abilities, and a dark open world. Players can embark on the campaign solo or with friends (two-player local or up to four players online) and explore an expansive endgame with cross-play and cross-progression.
        • The King of Fighters XV (PS5, PS4): The long-running fighting game series continues its legacy with 39 characters, a new combat system, and rollback netcode for smoother online matches. PlayStation Plus members will also receive the “Classic Leona” DLC costume.
        • Jusant (PS5): This action-puzzle climbing game offers a meditative journey up a towering structure. Players will master climbing tools, manage stamina, and uncover secrets from a bygone civilization.

        15th Anniversary Celebrations Throughout the Summer

        PlayStation Plus is rolling out a variety of activities to mark its 15th anniversary:

        • Game Trials for Premium Members:
          • WWE 2K25: Available now, Premium members can jump into a game trial of the latest wrestling title.
          • Monster Hunter Wilds: Starting June 30, Premium members can try out this ultimate hunting experience.
        • PlayStation Store Exclusive Offer Weekend: From June 27-29, PlayStation Plus members can access exclusive savings on titles like Sniper Elite: Resistance, Sid Meier’s Civilization® VII, and Star Wars Outlaws.
        • Valorant PS Plus Pack: Available now, all PlayStation Plus members can redeem a free Valorant pack including cosmetic items like gun buddies, a player card, and sprays, along with Radianite Points.

        The Fading Stars: My Take on PlayStation Stars Winding Down

        Well, folks, it’s a bittersweet day for many of us in the PlayStation community, especially for those of us who’ve been actively engaged with PlayStation Stars. Sony Interactive has announced that they’re winding down the current iteration of the loyalty program, and honestly, as someone who’s poured a good chunk of gaming time into it, it’s a bit of a gut punch.

        For those of us who live and breathe PlayStation, Stars wasn’t just a gimmick. It was a tangible way to get a little something back for our dedication. From racking up points by simply playing games to snagging those unique Digital Collectibles that celebrated PlayStation’s rich history, it felt like a genuine nod to the hardcore fans. I’m not going to lie, those points, redeemed for wallet funds, really added up over time and genuinely saved me money on new releases. As a power user, I was consistently engaging with campaigns, hitting those milestones, and frankly, I was seeing the benefits.

        Grace Chen, VP of Network Advertising, Loyalty & Licensed Merchandise, mentioned that Sony is always “experimenting with new and exciting ways to bring our community of players together.” And look, I get it. Companies evolve, programs shift, and they’re always looking at “player and industry trends.” But from my perspective on the ground, PlayStation Stars felt like it was hitting the mark for a significant portion of their most dedicated players. It fostered a deeper connection, as she put it, by actually rewarding that connection.

        So, what are the key takeaways from this announcement?

        • New Members Shut Off: As of today, new sign-ups for this version of PlayStation Stars are closed. If you’re not in, you’re out.
        • No Rejoining: If you’re a current member and you decide to cancel, you can’t rejoin this program, and all your hard-earned points vanish. So, think carefully before hitting that button!
        • Earning Deadline: You can still earn Digital Collectibles, Points, and level up your status until July 23, 2025, at 7:59 AM PDT. After that, no new campaigns, rewards, or status benefits. That’s a little over a year to squeeze out those last rewards.
        • Program End Date: The current program officially ceases on November 2, 2026.
        • Point Redemption Window: You’ve got until that November 2026 date to redeem any existing points, assuming they don’t expire before then.
        • Digital Collectibles Remain: Good news for the collectors – your existing Digital Collectibles will still be accessible, which is a small comfort.

        While I understand that “evolution” is part of the game, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss for a program that genuinely provided value and recognized the effort of loyal players like myself. The idea that they’re “exploring new ways to evolve our loyalty program efforts for the future” gives a glimmer of hope. I sincerely hope that whatever comes next truly builds upon the best aspects of Stars – the direct rewards, the recognition of active play, and the sense of being part of something bigger than just a transaction.

        We’ve supported PlayStation Stars since its 2022 launch, and I’m sure many of us, like me, will be keenly watching to see what the future holds for PlayStation’s loyalty initiatives. Here’s hoping the next iteration celebrates us, the players, just as effectively, if not more so, than Stars did. Until then, I’ll be burning through my remaining points and enjoying those last few campaigns. It’s been a good run, PlayStation Stars.

        Get ready, PlayStation fans! Sucker Punch Productions, the acclaimed studio behind Ghost of Tsushima, has officially announced its next epic adventure: Ghost of Yōtei. Mark your calendars, as this highly anticipated title is set to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025.

        While Ghost of Yōtei charts a new course with an unrelated story, Sucker Punch aims to deliver an experience that stands as a worthy follow-up to Jin Sakai’s journey. This time, players will step into the tabi boots of Atsu, a warrior driven by a deep-seated need for revenge.

        A Tale Forged in Fire and Vengeance

        The newly released “The Onryō’s List” trailer sets a grim stage. Sixteen years ago, in the rugged, untamed lands of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Atsu’s life was shattered. A ruthless gang known as the Yōtei Six murdered her family and left her for dead, pinned to a burning ginkgo tree outside her home.

        But Atsu survived. Honing her skills in combat and tracking over many years, she returns to her homeland with a singular purpose: to hunt down the six individuals responsible – The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and their leader, Lord Saito. Armed with the very katana used against her, Atsu begins her quest. However, Sucker Punch hints that her path will lead to more than just retribution, suggesting encounters with unexpected allies and the discovery of a new purpose amidst the ashes of her past.

        Evolving the Open World

        Sucker Punch is building upon the foundations laid by Ghost of Tsushima, promising an evolved open-world experience in Ghost of Yōtei. Players can expect even greater freedom and variety in how they explore the beautiful yet perilous landscape of Ezo.

        Key gameplay enhancements include:

        • Player Choice: You decide the order in which to pursue the members of the Yōtei Six.
        • Expanded Activities: Track down dangerous bounties or seek out weapon masters (sensei) to learn new skills.
        • Dynamic Exploration: Ezo is filled with both unexpected dangers and peaceful moments, including returning activities from Tsushima.
        • Campfire System: Set up camp anywhere in the open world to rest and regroup.
        • Glimpses of the Past: A new mechanic allows players to experience fragments of Atsu’s memories, deepening the understanding of her loss and motivations.

        The trailer offered glimpses of Ezo’s stunning scenery, Atsu’s new weaponry, potential allies, and the intriguing past-glimpse mechanic.

        PlayStation Plus Unveils March Lineup: Dragon Age, Sonic, Turtles

        PlayStation Plus subscribers are set for a diverse gaming experience in March, with the addition of “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” “Sonic Colors: Ultimate,” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection” to the monthly games lineup.

        The titles, announced by Adam Michel, director of game services – content at Sony Interactive Entertainment, will be available to PlayStation Plus members starting March 4.

        ‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ (PS5)

        BioWare’s “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” offers a single-player RPG experience where players lead a team to combat ancient gods. As Rook, the player can customize their character and navigate a rich narrative with seven companions.  

        ‘Sonic Colors: Ultimate’ (PS4)

        “Sonic Colors: Ultimate” brings the high-speed platforming of Sonic to PlayStation 4. Players will liberate alien Wisps from Dr. Eggman’s amusement park, utilizing their powers across six distinct worlds. The game features updated visuals and gameplay enhancements.  

        ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection’ (PS4, PS5)

        The “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection” compiles 13 classic Konami TMNT games. This collection includes quality-of-life improvements such as online and local multiplayer, save features, rewind functionality, and bonus content like art and historical media.  

        All three games will be available for download from March 4 to March 31.

        February’s Games Availability

        PlayStation Plus members have until March 3 to add “Payday 3,” “High on Life,” and “Pac-Man World Re-Pac” to their game libraries.

        Stealth and Vengeance:

        • Shinobi: Art of Vengeance: Sega revives its classic ninja platformer franchise with Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. Developed by Lizardcube, the trailer showcases fast-paced, stylish ninja action with lethal precision. Prepare to unleash vengeance on August 29th.  

        Racing Across Dimensions:

        • Sonic Racing CrossWorlds: Get ready to race across “land, sea, air, space and time” in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds The trailer teases high-speed races in ultimate machines. Sign up for a network test starting February 21st.  

        Digimon Story Continues:

        • Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii: The Like a Dragon franchise expands with a pirate-themed adventure in Hawaii in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. A demo is expected to drop soon, and Ichiban Kasuga will also appear in Dave the Diver DLC.  

        Crossover Craze:

        • Dave the Diver: Ichiban’s Holiday: Dave the Diver is crossing over with Like a Dragon in the Ichiban’s Holiday DLC. Ichiban Kasuga and other Like a Dragon characters team up with Dave in beat ’em up style action. The DLC arrives this April.

        Arena Shooter Sequel:

        • Splitgate 2: Splitgate 2 is coming to PS5, with a PS5 alpha starting February 27th. The trailer showcases fast-paced arena shooter action with portals and new factions.

        Puzzle Platforming with an Octopus:

        • Darwin’s Paradox!: Konami revealed Darwin’s Paradox!, a puzzle platformer where you play as Darwin, a clever octopus escaping a food processing plant. Use camouflage and inking skills to escape in 2025.  

        Roguelike Dungeon Crawler:

        • Warriors: Abyss: Koei Tecmo launched the roguelike Warriors: Abyss today on PS5 and PS4. The trailer teases challenging dungeon crawling action.

        Onimusha Returns:

        • Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny: Capcom is bringing Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny to PS4 on May 23rd. The trailer showcases samurai action against demonic hordes.
        • Onimusha: Way of the Sword: Also from Capcom, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set in Edo-period Kyoto and features intense swordplay against twisted creatures. It is slated for release in 2026.

        Metal Gear Solid Remake:

        • Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater: A new trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater confirmed the release date as August 28th. The trailer offers a glimpse at the remake of the classic stealth action game.

        • Hell Is Us: Hell Is Us received a new trailer, confirming a September 4, 2025 release. The game promises a post-apocalyptic soulslike experience dripping with atmosphere.
